Build for the largest plausible use case + 20%. A patio that is too small gets ignored. A patio with one chair too few never feels right.

- 1/8″–1/4″ per foot slope away from the house

- Trench drain across the downhill edge (where ponding is a risk)
- Daylight outlet or buried catch basin for collected water
- No buried dead-end drains (they always fail)

Plan integrated features before the pour. Adding them after means cutting and patching, which never looks as clean.

Plan from day 1:

- Every 2–3 years: Re-seal
- Annually: Pressure-wash (low PSI, fan tip) to remove deicer salt
- Avoid: Rock salt deicer in winter (use sand or CMA on stamped concrete)
A sealed patio at year 10 looks better than an unsealed patio at year 3.
