Dubuque is built on bluffs. Half the residential lots in the area have a grade change steep enough to need a wall somewhere. We design and build retaining walls and hardscape systems engineered for Driftless-region soils, hillside drainage, and Tri-State freeze-thaw.
What we build
- Poured-in-place concrete retaining walls (residential and commercial)
- Reinforced segmental retaining walls (block / paver-style)
- Boulder walls (locally sourced limestone where appropriate)
- Tiered wall systems for steep grades
- Walls integrated with patios, fire pits, and steps
- Driveway and parking-lot retaining walls (high-load engineered)
- Concrete steps and integrated seat walls
- Drainage systems (drain tile, French drains, dry wells, daylight outlets)
- Restoration backfill, topsoil, and seeding

Why drainage is the project
A retaining wall in Dubuque is fundamentally a drainage problem with a concrete wall in front of it. Clay-rich loess soil holds water, freeze-thaw lifts the wall every winter, and hydrostatic pressure pushes hard once the back fills with saturated soil. The wall does not fail because the concrete was bad; it fails because the drainage was never built.
Every wall we build gets:
- 4″ perforated drain tile at the footing level, wrapped in non-woven fabric
- 12″+ minimum of clean stone above the drain tile (no fines)
- Filter fabric between stone and the native soil
- Daylight outlet or sump connection (no buried dead-ends)
- Weep holes through the wall every 6–10 ft on poured systems
When you need an engineer
Most Tri-State jurisdictions require engineered drawings + a permit for walls:
- Taller than 4 ft (footing to top of wall)
- Supporting a surcharge (driveway, foundation, slope above)
- Tiered systems where lower walls support upper walls
- Within a setback to a property line or right-of-way
- In flood zones or near streams
We coordinate with engineers we have worked with for years; the engineering fee is typically $800–$2,500 depending on complexity.
Quality Concrete Built Tough
A wall is forever. We over-spec the drainage, never skimp on the footing, and stamp the work with a transferable 5-year workmanship warranty (longer on engineered walls). If a wall we build moves more than spec, we fix it.
